Our Services

The Pre-School operates within the school grounds of Cornwood Primary School. We have our own independent use of a building and free access to an outside area.  We are totally independent from the school, and you are not obliged to send your child to Cornwood Primary.

We are in receipt of funding for the provision of free early education for two, three and four year olds. We also provide care before and after school for children from 2 years up to the age of 11. We are registered on the Ofsted Early Years Register and the compulsory and voluntary parts of the Childcare Register.

Areas of Learning

7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. The professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs. This is a little bit like a curriculum in primary and secondary schools, but it’s suitable for very young children, and it’s designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests. Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and indoors and outdoors play.

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
  • Communication and Language Development (CAL)
  • Physical Development (PD)

As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas. These are:

  • Literacy (LIT)
  • Mathematics (MAT)
  • Understanding the World (UW)
  • Expressive Arts and Design (EAD)

Learning Journeys

Each child has their own online development profile through an app called ‘Famly’. The profile contains photographs, observations and assessments, nappy changes and signing in and out information.

On entry, an account will be set up for each relative listed on the permission form. Once you have created your account you can view observations, photos and assessments. Notifications are sent when a new observation/entry has been added, and you are able to add your comments and add observations from home. Invoices and Accident/Incident reports are also issued through the app.

Settling in

Key Person

Our key person system gives each member of staff particular responsibility for a small group of children. Each child in the group has one special adult to relate to, which can make settling into group very much easier. In addition, the key person is in a position to tailor the group’s curriculum to the unique needs of each child.

The key person maintains links by working with parents through shared record keeping to ensure that all children are supported in their learning. You will be notified of your child’s key person when they start with us. We also operate a ‘back up’ key person system.
